Exclusive: Kia Carens CNG In The Works With 1.4L Turbo Petrol Engine

Exclusive: Kia Carens CNG In The Works With 1.4L Turbo Petrol Engine | V3Cars

Kia India recently launched the Carens MPV at an attractive price. It set off with a  blazing start in the Indian market and has been performing well for the carmaker. Kia India are now developing the Carens CNG, which could make its entry in the market soon. It’s interesting to note that Kia have chosen the 1.4L turbo petrol for the CNG option and not the 1.5L normal petrol engine. Therefore, the Carens could be the first CNG model in India with a turbo petrol engine.

Our exclusive spy shots reveal that Kia India have begun testing the Carens CNG. It is expected to make use of the 1.4L turbo petrol engine, mated to the 6-speed manual transmission. The same can be seen on the registration sticker attached below, which carries the engine and transmission details.

We can also see the CNG tank in the boot of the Carens. Taking the weight and positioning of the Carens into account, using the 1.5L normal petrol engine for the CNG option would not make sense as it may not be adequate to haul 6-7 passengers and their luggage. The 1.4L turbo petrol, on the other hand, will have ample power and torque output despite the CNG kit.

The 1.4L turbo petrol engine in the Carens produces 140PS of power at 6000rpm and 242Nm of torque between 1500rpm and 3200rpm. Along with the 6-speed manual, Kia India also offer the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with the Carens 1.4L. However, the latter seems unlikely with the CNG powertrain.

Currently, only the Ertiga comes with a factory-fitted CNG option in the MUV space. The Eeco CNG is positioned much lower in the family utility vehicles segment. If Kia find success with the 1.4L turbo petrol CNG, the Carens could become the first CNG car in India with a turbo petrol engine. A few days ago, a few spy shots of the Kia Sonet CNG also surfaced online, equipped with the 1.0L turbo petrol engine. Click on the link below to read about the Sonet CNG in detail.
