Citroen India Rule Out Low-Cost AMTs — AT Option Coming Soon | V3Cars

Citroen are already working on an automatic transmission for the Indian market, which is likely to be introduced soon.

Citroen India Officially Rule Out AMTs

Citroen India have no plans to introduce automated manual transmissions (AMT) in their cars, largely due to their unrefined nature. AMTs typically cost less conventional torque converter automatics. However, they pale in comparison when it comes to refinement and responsiveness. There is always some kind of head nod motion associated with every upshift and downshift in an AMT, the intensity of which largely depends on the tuning and calibration of the particular unit.

Instead of AMTs, Citroen want to offer a premium and refined experience with their cars and given that their global lineup uses torque converters, it is safe to assume that Citroen cars sold in India will also come with torque converter automatics. However, since the torque converter transmission costs more than AMTs, expect the Citroen C3 automatic to carry a considerable premium over its AMT rivals like the Tata Punch, Hyundai Exter and Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2.

Citroen are yet to reveal a launch timeline for the C3 and C3 Aircross automatic; but upon being asked, Mr. Saurabh Vatsa, Citroen India brand head, replied, “soon enough”. We can expect the carmaker to launch  the C3 and C3 Aircross automatic towards the end of 2023 or in early 2024. The automatic transmission is likely to come exclusively with the 1.2L turbo petrol engine.

Speaking of fuel efficiency, this engine offers a claimed fuel efficiency of 19.6kmpl and 18.5kmpl with the C3 and C3 Aircross, respectively.
