Bharat NCAP Is All Set To Launch Tomorrow

With the launch set to take place tomorrow, India will finally have its own program to crash test new cars sold in the country. The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme will crash test cars and SUVs with up to 8 seats weighing under 3.5 tonnes.

Under the Bharat NCAP programme, carmakers can voluntarily offer their cars for crash tests under Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Based on the performance of cars in the crash tests, Bharat NCAP will award star safety ratings for both adult and child occupant safety.

Bharat NCAP tests should help car buyers draw a comparison among different cars based on the performance in the crash tests. Once the Bharat NCAP comes into action, the government expects the demand for safer cars to increase and the rate of deaths by road accidents to drop.

It remains to be seen what kind of testing procedures and standards Bharat NCAP incorporates in their crash tests. Since Bharat NCAP is a unit formed by the Indian government, we expect more carmakers to voluntarily participate to improve road safety in India.
