Kia has taken wraps off the 7-seater Sonet in Indonesia. As the name suggests, the 7-seater Sonet is identical to its 5-seater sibling save for an additional row of seating.

For the uninitiated, the Indonesia-spec Sonet is longer than the India-spec model. While the latter measures 3995mm in length, the former is 125mm long and measures 4120mm. That said, both the SUVs are identical when it comes to width (1790mm), height (1642mm) and wheelbase (2500mm). And the 7-seater Sonet is identical to the 5-seater version when it comes to dimensions.  As a result, the 7-seater Sonet has no boot space whatsoever.

As mentioned above, the 7-seater Sonet looks identical to the 5-seater model. However, on the inside, it not only gets the additional row seats but also gets dedicated roof-mounted vents for them. Other features remain similar including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, connected car technology, an electric sunroof, ventilated front seats, a Bose sound system, wireless charging, a rear parking camera, six airbags and front and rear parking sensors.

Under the hood, while the India-spec Sonet is offered with three engine options to choose from, the Indonesia-spec Sonet is offered with a single 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It makes 115PS and 144Nm paired to either a 6-speed MT or a CVT automatic. While this engine transmission combination is not offered on the India-spec Sonet, it is available on the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta.

Kia is not expected to launch the 7-seater Sonet in India. However, the carmaker is working on an MPV for India and it has already been testing in India. Likely to be sharing its platform with the bigger Seltos, the Kia MPV is expected to debut by early 2022. Hyundai has already showcased its new 7-seater Alcazar which will go on sale in the coming few months.
