5 New Born Electric Mahindra SUVs Reveal Date Confirmed | V3Cars
With a teaser for 5 electric SUVs with different body styles, Mahindra confirmed that they will reveal them all on August 15, 2022. Mahindra had earlier promised a July reveal for 3 electric SUVs, but they rescheduled it to August 15, 2022. It looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see these electric SUV design concepts. However, it looks like that to make it up to the fans for the delay, Mahindra threw in a couple more designs to bring the total concept reveals to 5.
What Is The Meaning Of Born Electric SUVs?
Mahindra are calling this breed of SUVs ‘Born Electric’. This gives us a hint that unlike the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Kona and MG ZS EV, these new SUVs will have a dedicated battery-electric platform. The Nexon, Kona and ZS are primarily petrol/diesel engine compatible platforms, which the respective carmakers altered to accommodate an electric powertrain and battery pack.
Hence, such electric vehicles neither leverage the handling characteristics like a battery electric made from the ground up nor do they fully benefit from the packaging. Most dedicated battery electric vehicle platforms store the batteries in the base of the frame. Given how heavy and dense Lithium batteries are, such placement gives these cars a very low centre of gravity. Therefore, such electric SUVs handle deceptively well given their size and visual mass.
Secondly, placing the battery packs in the base of the frame also gives the frame extra strength. So, the battery packs become a load-bearing part of the frame itself, further strengthening the platform. Finally, placing battery packs in the base liberates a lot of space in the cabin and the front of the car. Thus, most cars on a dedicated battery-electric platform also have a usable luggage space in the front, which people often call the frunk. Such cars also typically have a flat floor to easily slide around in the back seat.
5 New Born-Electric SUVs
Among the SUVs teased, one is a straight up, boxy SUV with possibly 3 rows of seating. Two concepts seem to have a sporty rear with an aggressively-slanting rear windshield and an integrated roof-mounted spoiler. This gives them a coupe-like side profile while the spoiler breaks the silhouette and maintains the SUV profile.
The final two concepts have a more obvious coupe styling. The last one even has a spoiler at the extreme end. Instead of integrating the spoiler with the roof, having it right around the taillights along with the muscular bonnet line almost makes it look like a muscle car with a hint of crossover. In fact, the last concept in the teaser looks a lot like a sedan with cross country touring aspirations. But, Mahindra have played both, the SUV and sedan games and they know what they are good at. So, Mahidnra calling all of their 5 electric concepts SUV is not surprising.
