Mahindra Thar 5 Door Caught On Test — Debut Likely At 2023 Auto Expo | V3Cars
It’s no secret that Mahindra are working on expanding the Thar SUV range. While Mahindra are reportedly working on a few special editions, they have also been busy developing the Thar 5 door. In fact, the latter has been caught testing for the first time in Tamil Nadu. While it wears heavy camouflage, the presence of extra windows confirms it to be the new Thar 5 door.
The Mahindra Thar 5 door retains the classic Jeep silhouette and looks somewhat similar to the Jeep Wrangler. The test mule can be seen equipped with the same squarish LED tail lights and boot-mounted spare wheel as the Thar 3 door. The side-opening tailgate from the 3 door model is carried over as well. On the dimensions front, the Thar 5 door test mule looks longer than the Thar 3 door thanks to a longer wheelbase to accommodate the extra doors and seats.

However, we do not expect any big changes made to the width and height of the Thar 5 door. In addition to the extra seating, Mahindra are likely to also offer new features with the Thar 5 door. These features could include a new infotainment system with connected car tech, 6 airbags, 360-degree parking camera and a sunroof.
On the powertrain front, we expect the new Thar 5 door to carry the same 2.2L turbo diesel and the 2.0L turbo petrol engine options. However, both engines could offer more power and torque than the Thar 3 door to haul the extra weight with ease. Both engine options are likely to come with manual and automatic transmission options along with 4-wheel-drive.

Mahindra Thar 5 door will rival other 5 door 4-wheel-drive SUVs like the upcoming Force Gurkha 5 door and Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5 door. It is worth noting that the Gurkha 5 door was recently spied in its production guise, pointing towards an imminent launch. Mahindra are likely to reveal the Thar 5 door at the 2023 Auto Expo along with their new range of electric SUVs and special editions.
