Toyota Corolla Cross — Hydrogen Combustion Vehicle Showcased At 2023 Auto Expo

While electric vehicles are taking over the world, carmakers are looking at other green mobility solutions to reach net zero emissions. While Toyota have dabbled with plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles, the carmaker is now working on hydrogen combustion technology. Toyota showcases their hydrogen combustion technology at the 2023 Auto Expo in the form of the Corolla Cross SUV.

Toyota Corolla Cross Concept At 2023 Auto Expo

Toyota showcased their hydrogen combustion concept at the 2023 Auto Expo in concept form. Toyota announced the Corolla Cross hydrogen combustion concept in December 2022 and are currently working on turning the concept into a production model. The Corolla Cross concept uses a 1.6L 3-cyl turbo petrol engine with high-pressure hydrogen direct injection technology.

As per Toyota, hydrogen combustion engines will benefit the environment and users in multiple ways. The key merits of this technology include the ability to leverage existing internal combustion technologies, quick refuelling time and decrease the dependence on elements like lithium and nickel. Toyota are currently working on the Corolla Cross hydrogen combustion concept and the brand is still unclear if this technology will reach road cars. However, as per the carmaker, hydrogen combustion is finding success in motorsports.
