Why The Volkswagen Virtus Is A Better Buy Than Skoda Slavia? V3Cars Opinion

Ever since Skoda India launched the Slavia sedan, we knew that its Volkswagen counterpart wasn’t far behind. On June 9, Volkswagen India launched the Virtus at attractive prices and it got everyone thinking about which one is better out of the two. Should you choose the understated elegance of the Slavia or the striking and sporty-looking Virtus? If we were to form an opinion based on design alone, w’d pick the Virtus without any second thoughts. But what are the other factors that make the Volkswagen Virtus a better buy over its Czech sibling? Let’s find out!

Better Value At A Lower Asking Price

It’s no secret that Volkswagen usually charge a small premium over its counterpart from Skoda. However, Volkswagen also package their cars better across all variants. For instance, while the Virtus failed to undercut the base price of the Slavia, it packs a lot more kit for the incremental cost. The Volkswagen Virtus Comfortline offers all-LED headlights, 16-inch steel wheels, fog lights and 8 speakers as standard. The Skoda Slavia Active, on the other hand, is offered with halogen headlights, 15-inch wheels and only front speakers and tweeters.

For the additional kit, Volkswagen only charge a premium of Rs. 20,000 for the Virtus Comfortline over the Slavia Active. However, it is worth mentioning that the prices of the Virtus are bound to increase in the coming months.

Sporty GT Plus A Lot Cheaper Than Slavia

While the Virtus Comfortline packs more for a little premium, the Virtus GT Plus offer sporty looks and features at a lower price than the Slavia 1.5 DCT. The Virtus GT Plus comes at a price of Rs. 17.92 lakh whereas the Slavia Style 1.5 DCT retails at Rs. 18.39 lakh ex-showroom. That makes the Slavia a good Rs. 47,000 more expensive than the Virtus, while not offering anything extra. On the other hand, the Virtus GT Plus gets multiple sporty bits like black alloy wheels, red ambient lighting, dynamic turn indicators, aluminum pedals, a boot lip spoiler and sporty seat upholstery.

Slavia

Semiconductor Shortage Yet To Plague The Virtus

While Skoda have temporarily removed certain features from their models to circumvent the issue of semiconductor shortage, Volkswagen is yet to face these issues with the Virtus. Volkswagen stated that they have enough cars to serve the current demand. However, the German carmaker may consider stripping down the variants to serve the demand in the near future. For now, the Virtus comes with the top-of-the-line 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system whereas Skoda are forced to offer the Slavia with a smaller 8.0-inch infotainment system until supply chain issues are sorted. However, both the Slavia and Virtus do not get a subwoofer for now.
